Dentist?

When did you all begin taking your children to the dentist? Our pediatrician recommended taking our son once he got I think it was 10 or 12 teeth in. He has about that now and he’s 2. I just don’t ever remember going to the dentist until I was about 6/7. I don’t want my son to be scared of the dentist and I know that if I were to take him now he would definitely be scared and i don’t want his first trip to scar him.

My son was a little over 2. They basically just count their teeth and check for cavities. I made my appointment first so he saw me go. Then he went. I counted his teeth at home every night for about 2 weeks before the appointment. I was in the room and allowed to sit in the chair with him if needed. It wasn’t traumatic. He had fun.

My daughter went at 1. She had at least 12 teeth by then.

Both my pedi and my dentist said not until three or four, only before if you suspect a problem. Also, most insurance wont cover before that age.

The American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry say that the first dental visit should occur within six months after the baby's first tooth appears, but no later than the child's first birthday.
I’ll admit though my first son didn’t go until 14 months, but has been every 6 months since and has been more cooperative each time. My baby will be going at 10 months (in September) because he already has a few teeth and that’s when my 2 year old is due to go back, so might as well take them together.
