Can I trim a cat's fur?

Question

The people I babysit for have a cat. I'm not sure if he is considered long hair, or medium hair. Anyways, it's long enough go get matted and they do not take him to the groomers. He has a decent size chunk of fur that is matted really bad. Can I just take a pair if scissors and cut it off?
Would brushing his fur regularly help prevent this? If so, how often and what kind of brush?

We take our Humphrey (he’s a ragdoll) every 3 months to be groomed. He was getting really bad knots despite our trying to brush him out regularly. He looks and smells so good after. TOTALLY worth it ☺️❤️ Not to mention he looks adorable afterwards 😫😍❤️

I generally try to work it out with my fingers at first until it pulls away some from their skin and then I’ll use scissors to quickly snip it off. I wait until she’s asleep and not paying attention. But yes regular brushing will prevent mats

I would not reccomend scissors. Cats have very elastic skin and one small cut turns into a large cut. A slicker brush can really help. Or each a flea comb.

You can cut it out but be very careful or they sell a dematting brush but it looks terrifying. Cats can be groomed/shaved, but brushing with a thin metal bristle pet brush often will help prevent the knots.

Sometimes if you cut off the bottom half or a little more of the mat, you can comb out the rest without worrying about cut the cat's skin.

Be careful with scissors...I was a vet tech for 10 years and have seen a number of cats come in with large cuts in their skin from owners trying to cut out mats! If you do use scissors, take a comb and wiggle through the base of the mat, separating the mat from the skin, and then cut about the comb. The comb will keep you from snipping the skin.

If they give you permission yes you could cut it but also yes you can brush them often to avoid it they have different options at walmart and any pet store
