NEED ADVICE !! New pound puppy got ahold of cat.

So tonight we were walking both dogs and brought them in for dinner. We have learned the baby we just rescued is food protective so we feed each dog in separate sides of the room with their harnesses in our clutch so when they finish they have to wait on the other.

Our female is the one we just rescued. She normally just growls at the cats when they walk passed the food dish. Today she turned and snapped and grabbed ahold of the cats chin and shook her.

My husband snatched the dog up by the harness and I popped her butt and she dropped our cat. We put her in the cage and immediately wrapped the cat in a blanket and examined. Cat is fine from the outside. I’m taking her to work with me in the morning to get the dr to look at her and do some xrays and make sure nothing we can’t see got hurt. Our cat is walking around.

I’m completely concerned about what I should do now.

We have had this dog for about 3 weeks. She’s gotten along with everyone so far. She’s lovely with kids and anyone that walks in the door. It’s just the food thing.

I understand animals that have never had a home before are going to act different. And be harder to train. Be a little more protective over what they have.

I guess what I need advise on is if I should try different methods such as locking her away for dinner time? rehoming her? Obviously passing on knowledge that we have learned about her. And will also be the last resort.

She will NOT be going back to the pound.

We don’t want to lose her. We are going to try different things. Does anyone have suggestions on different methods to try. All we have right now is training classes and putting her away for food.

UPDATE ON CAT: so far she’s fine. She’s doing her normal activities. She cleaned herself up. She’s still going to vet in the morning. The only difference is she’s holding her baby a little tighter tonight. ❤️
