do I need to bring my baby's birth certificate to fly?

I’m in Canada if you fly within Canada only need birth certificate. If you fly outside you need passport. If driving you can cross the border with only birth certificate.

In the US you don’t need a birth certificate if you fly anything but Southwest...Southwest will ask to look at it to make sure they are under 2 even though a 4 month old obviously is

If identification! I had no idea but luckily I had something with her name and birthday!

Baby girl has been on 6 flights so far (4 months old). All US flights and all on Southwest. You can just take a picture on your phone of their proof of birth paperwork you left the hospital with or their birth certificate if you have it. When you check in, you just ask for the a lap ticket for your LO. They will then ask you for “proof of age.” You just hand then your phone, they look at it, type in their name and birthdate, and that’s it. You won’t need to show anything else at any other point. 
Also helpful to know... you can bring liquid breast milk, any amount, through security. You can bring also any amount of frozen breast milk with ice packs through security. It’ll go through the X-ray machine and they’ll pull it for “inspection.” They swab the outside or test a little drop if it’s liquid and then that’s it. 
Again I’ve only flown within the US and all Southwest Flights.

I flew Southwest and had to have the birth certificate but just a copy. I didn't want to take the original. They did ask to see it even though he's three months.

I had to with my daughter.  She was almost 2 and it verified she was just under so she flew free

You need something that proves his birthdate- insurance card, BC, passport, etc. 
They have to have something that proves the babies age even though they’re obviously under 2.
