How do you approach a girl when you aren't even sure if she's into girls?

I always found it easier through mutual friends. Then I knew for sure. But if I was at a club I would go up and dance and if they started dancing with me they were usually into me back. Otherwise it's just down to flirting and see if you get a positive response back
