My first boyfriend was when I was 17, and he was 20 (if I remember right.. he may have been 21??). He was a great first boyfriend in so many ways, but he wasn’t the brightest crayon in the box, and we didn’t have many deep conversations... but he was a sweetheart!  
The next guy I dated was in college. We dated for almost a year and a half, before finding out he couldn’t keep his pants on, and slept with a ton of girls. After him, I began dating a guy who had been one of my closest friends for almost a year. He was vocal about wanting to date me, but I kept saying no, because I had a boyfriend and I knew he only wanted me because he couldn’t have me... but I liked a lot about him, so later we started dating. I figured I could trust him because he saw how much the other guy had hurt me, and I figured he wouldn’t do that to me... We dated, graduated college, and moved to Los Angeles together. A few years later, we got engaged, and then married. Things instantly took a turn and he changed... by our 1 year anniversary, he was picking fights with me constantly, staying out all night, not answering his phone, and basically being a huge jerk. I was devastated but we separated and filed for divorce (I literally had net even realized he was wanting divorce until our last fight when he said some awful things, and asked for time to “be single”- at 27 years old!! I told him being married isn’t something you do when it is convenient and play single whenever you want. And I asked if he wanted a divorce or something, and he jumped up and was like “yes!”. Turns out, he was treating me like shit so I would be the one to leave him, so it wouldn’t be his “fault”.)  Found our a year later that he had cheated on me, which is why he PROPOSED, knowing if I found out, I’d be gone. (I was kind of his meal ticket) He wasn’t ready for marriage, even though we were already living together. He said later, that he should have just left things like they were, because being “married” added so much more pressure (in his head- not because of anything I was doing) 
I stayed in LA for several years after that, and really came into my own. I grew a lot, more independent, and I really love the person I became. A few years later I moved back home, and at that point had only dated one or two guys past a third date. Basically I wasn’t willing to put up with much (my ex had been borderline alcoholic, and had a terrible temper. Have MANY stories of him destroying my things, talking down to me, and being an ass when he was in a “mood”. So after all of that, I was very picky!)
Anyway, I moved home, and about a year and a half later, met an amazing guy, who I have since married, and we just had our second daughter, 4 weeks ago!! I am 42 now, and have never been happier! My ex wasn’t the best for me, but he did give me some good memories, and i am grateful he was in my life for several reasons, but in the end, I was better for him, than he was for me. And my now hubby is such a better person. I feel loved, safe and cared for in a way the other guys never showed me. He is definitely good for me!!!
There were lots of times I was so sad for being single, and wondering why guys didn’t like me, and wishing I was in a relationship... but looking back, I am happy with how things turned out! If I had dated more in high school, I may not have been willing to go to college out of state. If I hadn’t gone to my college, I never would have met my first husband and moved to LA. If I had never had those years to really learn more about myself, and become who I am now, I would still be a doormat! If I hadn’t moved home when I did, and met the girl who eventually introduced me to my now husband (who lived an hour and a half away from where we were living), I never would have met him! Never would have had these two beautiful girls. Everything would be different. And I can’t imagine it would be better.
