Winter coat, what size?

Okay so I’m having my first little boy in January. My due date is January 10th 2020. This baby store where I live is having a great deal on infant/toddler winter coats. I want to buy one for the next winter after he is born, so winter of 2020/2021. Should I buy a 12 month or 18 month?

Baby clothes are counted to the max size. So 12 months would fit from 9-12 months (in theory). Definitely do 18 months.

Buy both sizes. If you don’t use one you can sell it, save it, or donate it. But if you buy the wrong size then you have those options without a coat.

Coats always run big on my kids so I would say 12 months. We always did a coat and snowpants so I think it’s a great idea. We live in Ohio. If you can find one with a liner that zips out that would be even better.

Ok I just pulled out our winter coats and tried them on my kids. We have a 6-12 month coat from Baby Gap and a 12-18 month coat from Baby Gap and also a 6-12 month Hatley snowsuit. 
My oldest turned 2 in May. He’s average size for his age and the 12-18m coat is still a bit big on him. He wore it this past winter with room to spare and my guess is it will fit him well this coming winter.  He actually still “fits” into both 6-12month options, they just aren’t long enough in the arms or torso (or legs in the case of the snowsuit) 
I also have an 8 month old who is 92nd percentile for height and weight, so around the size of the average 12month old, and both 6-12month options fit him well now. They may or may not still fit come winter. He was born in November though, so 2 months ahead of your baby’s timeline, and like I said he’s very big for his age. So I would go for the 12 month size if I were you. (I voted 18 initially thinking too big is better than too small, but then I realized I have both size coats in the closet and I could give a better answer if I tested the sizes on my own kids)

I feel like most babies/toddlers tend to fit in sizes bigger than what they are, so I'd do 18 months.

Just a tips, of course depending whereabouts you live, coats for a 1year old is not smart if they are to be out in the snow. Then a snowsuit is way better.
