Do you think some brides purposely pick out ugly dresses for their bridesmaids?

So I was planning a wedding with my friend looking through a magazine with wedding gowns and bridesmaids dresses. I showed her a couple bridesmaids dresses that I thought were cute and she said you need to choose something not to cute so they don’t outshine the bride.

I’ve never thought of this and I just think I would pick something that I like instead of something I think is ugly. Do you think some brides purposely pick out ugly dresses for their bridesmaids?
