The greatest commandment? Jesus things? Religious rules?

"Jesus said unto him, Thou shaltlove the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thymind. [38] This is the first and great commandment. [39] And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. [40] On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets." 
(This is in Matthew 22)
So a Pharisee who was an expert in the law asked Jesus what the greatest commandment was in the law to test him and he said that stuff^^^
So, what are we supposed to make of that? Should we interpret every other potential "law" in the Bible under this lens? Does this render some old testament rules not applicable towards modern Christianity? 
Not Christian anymore, just trying to understand. I'm interested in Jesus' character.
I decided to ask in controversy corner because I'm interested in answers from everyone, religious or not. And I think it's controversial.

I mean it's all just made up fictional characters so you can interpret it to mean whatever you want it to mean, it won't make it any more real

The Pharisees were very concerned about religion and following a strict set of rules and always keeping them. Like following rules will save you. Jesus is saying that they’ve completely missed the mark herein the law that was given. The rules aren’t there to simply follow but they all stem from love. The reason we’re told not to murder is because we need to love others. That’s also why were told not to covet or steal. Gods commandment to have no other gods before Him or to worship in graven images should be done bc we love Him not bc we are just following a rule. Jesus is concerned about the heart. Not just the actions of a person. If you love the Lord with all your heart and your neighbors as yourself these “rules” will naturally happen and flow from you. You don’t need to be told not to abuse your children or feed them so they’re not hungry or be there for them when they are in pain. You do those things bc you love them not bc someone has commanded you to. Jesus wasn’t taking away the commandments he was simply explaining the heart of them...I hope that I explained it well enough

The greatest principle in my opinion is the golden rule. That's really all that's needed and it's pretty much common sense. 
I'm not Christian so I don't really care what the greatest commandment is.

Remember the Holy Bible is for the spiritual minded if that is NOT you, you will NOT understand it. What you need to do is ask the Lord Jesus for help and understanding instead of asking these questions on here..because truthfully if you can't past the part where's his commandments are about love then I don't know what else to say or explain.

All of scripture is useful today. Not all is to be interpreted literally.  The old testament must be viewed in light of the new testament.  Example:the old testament says says to kill the passover lamb every year, one for each household. The new testament says Jesus is our passover lamb. Killed once for remission of sin of all who believe. Therefore in light of the new testament we don't need to follow the old testament law about the passover lamb.  The same thing applies to a lot of the old testament laws. Some were done away with by Jesus in the new testament, others where confirmed and pronounced still in affect. This is why we need the whole of scripture to gain a complete understanding of the truth.

Romans 13:10 says, “Love does no wrong to a neighbor, therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.” Upon closer inspection of the Mosaic Law, it becomes easy to see that God never meant for His law to be understood by what was said exactly, but by what was intended. For example, one part in Leviticus commands people not to put out stumbling blocks for the blind and not to curse at the deaf, but then does that mean we can make fun of those who can’t walk or those who are mute? Of course not. This lense is important because many ask “what is a sin and what’s good,” and this answers that question. What is good, in God’s eyes, is biblical love. What is sin is anything not biblically loving. “Upon these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” Grace always has harder commands. People think because of the age of grace, it’s easier now. It’s most certainly not. Christians are never allowed to just read a law literally, they must always understand its intent (word of the law vs spirit of the law). So, in a sense, yes, your theory is correct. Truth is not compromised, but hypocrisy and “lip service” are strictly condemned by God.
