Why do people ask the gender of the baby when it’s clear what they are wearing

I had my newborn in a pink outfit and some old lady in the shops asked me if it was a boy or a girl what the fuck?

Because boy's can wear pink too? Girls can even wear blue 🙄

Some people just want to be respectful. My younger sister use to wear blue and grey all the time and people immediately thought she was a boy. It’s easier for them to ask them to make anyone embarrassed.

If it was an older person it could be because of cataracts (typically makes everything they look at more yellowish-grey), or age related macular degeneration (the center of what you are looking at is just blurry, and colours are mixed up). It might even be colour blindness, or a lovely combination of these and some politeness.

Because if the old lady said aweeee what a cute girl you have ... and it turns out it’s a boy , and you get mad at her , so she’s covering her butt and making sure she doesn’t offend you .. that’s what I would do too🤷🏻‍♀️

Isn’t Pink vs blue a relatively modern thing? My grandfather wore dresses as a baby, which was common for both girls and boys, and he said they didn’t have those colors sorted by sex. 
My daughter wears a lot of hand me downs from her male cousins who outgrew them, I also wore clothes from my male cousins when I was a baby. It wasn’t a big deal then and I don’t know why it suddenly is today?

I mean... I dressed my daughter in whatever colour I wanted when she was a newborn? 
Some people just want to be sure incase someone gets offended if they refer to them as the wrong gender. People get offended by everything these days, you’re a prime example. Someone was being polite, and you got offended because you thought it meant that your newborn wasn’t “obviously” a girl just because they were wearing pink. 
All newborns look like cute potatoes, the best bet is to say “aww, what is their name?” To avoid shit like this.

It’s a new world out there. They don’t know if the parents don’t wanna be stereotypical of their child’s gender. It’s also just polite. Don’t be offended. things r a changin.

It’s common knowledge and widely accepted that pink=girls, so it could be that they’re just trying to be awkward, or if it’s an older person then it could be that it just hadn’t clicked as fast. It happened to me once at the mall when she was a baby and I had to say “it’s obviously a girl cos she’s in pink and has earrings”. The old lady was all apologetic “of course she is! What a plum” 🤷🏻‍♀️
