Cervix Checks?

My doctor wants to start checking my cervix at 36 weeks. What can I expect? Does it hurt?

Checking your cervix can be uncomfortable and it doesn’t tell you anything. Maybe ask your doctor why they want to check? Some people are dilated for weeks and some people are at 0 but dilated so fast they have their baby within hours. Checking where you’re dilated to is mostly a waste of time and can introduce risk of infection to baby. I always say “no thanks until I’m in labor or over 41 weeks” and keep my pants on until then.

My OB starts checking at 36 weeks. Some say it doesn’t tell you too much about how close you are to labor, but at my 39 week check up with my last pregnancy, I had dilated 1 1/2 cm more and was way more effaced from the week before and started having contractions that night. Either way, it’s very uncomfortable and if anything it helped prepare me for the hundreds of times it seemed they checked me during labor! 😩

For me it hurt because I wasn’t dilated at all and my cervix was up high. But, there’s no reason to have it checked that early and you can deny getting checked.

I get mine checked almost every apt because I have a cervical cerclage placed and they need to make sure it’s still tightly sealed.  They are pretty painful and now I get contractions afterwards, but it’s bearable as far as the checking part goes.

Mine doesn’t check unless you go more than a week overdue.
