Birth control or wait

So I was suppose to tell me RE when my period started. They responded back with I can start birth control or wait until my follow up with the dr. I'm on the fence on what I should do. If I start I will be ready to start the next round right away after talking to the dr. If I just wait I will most likely have to wait another month before starting a cycle. Has anyone ever gotten pregnant on their own while waiting to start a new ivf cycle at 42 yrs old? I feel like it's worth a shot to try on my own.
