Newborn clothes essentials?

Question

What sizes of what and how much? I have no idea. With my first I was beyond blessed to get the entire wardrobe of a friend’s son’s so anything I had to buy was extra or minimal. I got rid of all his baby clothes a month before finding out about my second 🤦🏼‍♀️

0-3 is your best friend and will prob be in those the longest! The best thing for me was sleep sacs!

My baby lived in onesies & leggings for the first 5-6 months. The only time I bothered doing cute outfits was for church or family outings. So I did 7 long sleeve onesies, 7 short sleeved onesies, 10 pants for each size up to 6 months. And then 4-5 cute outfits in each size up to 6 months. Then I transitioned him from mainly onesies to cute outfits. Once he started crawling, changing him was like wrestling a greased up pig, so no more snaps & onesies for me! It was way easier to just dress him in normal shirts & pants.

I would honestly have more 0-3, 3-6 months than newborn. My son was born big so he never fit in newborn but it seemed like he was in those two sizes FOREVER lol. I would probably buy a handful newborn. But only wash 1 or 2 newborn outfits to take to the hospital and keep the tags on the rest just in case!

We were unprepared and had to buy newborn sized clothing after my daughter was born. So I definitely recommend getting some, just not tons and don't spend a lot (easy to find secondhand since so many babies grow out of this size so fast). Our baby wore this size for a month or two. Not a super long time at all, but we did still need them. 
My personal favorites were:
- The little gown sacks with elastic or a knot at the bottom. Like a comfy blanket with sleeves and easy to get in and out for diaper changes. 
- Short sleeve onesies. We used these the most since it was springtime and we did skin to skin constantly (plus I wore my baby all the time, etc). We didn't really need to worry about being cold. If it's going to be winter for you, maybe opt for long sleeve. 
- The little coverall suits with snaps. I hated zippers and I hate footies for my babies (probably bc I hate them for myself). Snaps are more convenient and quiet imo, and maybe of these can convert from sack to leg sleeves depending on how they're snapped. 
Skip:
- Cutesy outfits with the overalls and the bow tie and the shoes. You won't want to deal with all that when you change their clothes 3 times a day. 
- Anything with zippers. They're louder than you think in the middle of the night. 
- inconvenient clothing. Dresses and overalls and such are so adorable, but pretty obnoxious to deal with when you're dressing a newborn. Keep it super simple and comfy at first, and save those kinds of things for later when you've got the hang of things and baby is a little bigger.

My son was a big baby and didn’t fit newborn clothes so thankfully we had 0-3 months which he outgrew before 3 months. He work 3-6 months until he was 5 months old and always stayed a couple of months ahead of the size “age”. He was in 18 month onesies by one year so I never got too many of one size.
