August 4 birth story! Kohen Michael đź’™
My baby boy turned a week old today and I figured I’d finally get around to sharing our birth story!❤️
So- initially, I was scheduled for induction on July 30th. I was 0% effaced and 1cm dilated. They gave me 6 rounds of cytotec and 9 hours of pitocin and I had very minimal change. I dilated to a 2 but my cervix still wasn’t thinning. July 31st was my 2nd given due date and I was discouraged! So, after all of that, my doctor gave me some options- to stay another night and do more cytotec, to go home and come back for another induction or to just wait it out and go naturally.
I opted for the second choice, I couldn’t take anymore cervical checks with my cervix being so far back. It was becoming so painful!
So we returned August 3- my original due date. The first check showed I was still dilated to a 2 but was 60% effaced. They gave cytotec once again. I was slowly progressing and my doctor recommended the epidural to see if it would really get things moving and let me try to sleep through the night. The epidural was AMAZING. I was having contractions that weren’t unbearable. They were tolerable but it was great not to feel any checks or any sort of pain. Although, it was hard to sleep with the nurse coming in every so often and being all hooked up to the machines. I didn’t sleep much at all. My last dose of cytotec was given around 3am. The nurse returned to my room around 5 to check me and my water had broke on its own (woo!) the nurse told me I should try to sleep since I would need the energy to push later in the morning...yeah right! I was too excited!
So they continue checking me throughout the morning, and after my water had broke, I was feeling the contractions despite my epidural. I was progressing quickly. and was at a 9 and 90% effaced by 9am. My doctor ordered pitocin just to get me to where i needed to be. I was having back labor due to my little guys position. My doctor comes in about an hour later, he tells me he’s going to do a check. Well! He checks me and instructs me to start pushing. Yayyy! So I push. And push. And push. And I could totally feel my baby in the canal but he says, “you’ve been pushing for an hour straight now...and your middle pelvic bone is just too small for your baby to fit through.” He tells me a c section will be necessary but since neither baby or I were in distress, he would take his time with it- it was not an emergency. At this point, my back labor had moved up in between my shoulder blades and I was in soooo much pain! I couldn’t move my body at all. The nurses and anesthesiologist were prepping me for my cesarean and I was a bit anxious but mostly because of the excruciating pain in my upper back...they finally wheel me to the OR and put me on the table. I was EXHAUSTED. I hadn’t slept, had been in labor for 24 hours and was so drugged up for my cesarean. The moment they put me on the table, the back pain went away. I was awake my entire surgery and repair.
Kohen Michael was born on August 4th, 2019 at 1:18pm. He was so much bigger than what my doctor expected, 8lbs1oz, 22 in, which is why he would have never fit through my pelvic cavity. All in all, I would say I had a pretty good experience. I would do it all over again for my baby boy! ❤️
