Birth certificate?

The child’s father and I are no longer together. I am confused on if I have him sign the birth certificate or not? The baby is getting my last name, but what does him signing it do? Give him parental rights and put him on child support? What happens if he does not sign it?

if he signs it, it means he has established paternity meaning he has established all parental rights to your child (aka the exact same rights you have) meaning for example, if he picked your child up from daycare but you didn’t want him to and you didn’t have full custody from a judge, he can keep the child and legally there isn’t much law enforcement could do about it. If he doesn’t sign it, he doesn’t have parental rights until he (or you) go to court and establish his paternal rights but if he doesn’t sign it, that also means until said rights are established, he won’t have court mandated child support.

Not having my ex sign the bc was the best decision for me. I was able to move my child overseas without his knowledge or permission & I don’t need to ask him for permission to do anything. If you think it’s in the best interest to not sign it then don’t have him do it. If you are seeking financial compensation and things like that he will need to be on it though.

In Utah, the dads signature isn’t required to send the birth certificate in. Only the Mother’s is required.  Putting his name on it gives him parental rights and he right to visitation. It does make it so he has to pay child support. Is the $300-400 a month worth your emotional sanity? Because you will eventually have to share your child with him if his name is on the birth certificate.

Yes it does give him parental rights, so let him him sign it or put him on it as the father if you don’t want him to have that authority.

From my experience having the dad on the birth certificate depends on if you were married when the baby was born and if the dad is going to try to fight it. 
If you were married when the baby was born dad has paternal rights no matter what. If you were not he would have to have a paternity test done to prove that he was the dad to have any rights.
My opinion is if you have any doubts DO NOT put him on it.
