Baby shower rant/advice needed

Katie

I’m currently 26 weeks with my first and am wondering when most ladies are having their baby showers and who is hosting for you?

My immediate family lives 4 hours away and will be hosting a baby shower in my hometown at the beginning of September. My husband’s family lives near us so I had assumed that my mother-in-law would want to host a shower here, especially since this will be her first grandchild. However, there has been no mention of a shower by her or my husband’s stepmom, and I’m starting to feel like they’re running out of time to plan something and get invitations sent out, etc.

When we got married, my MIL talked about throwing me a bridal shower but then about a month later, after I hadn’t heard any details and asked her about it, she said she wasn’t going to do it anymore because she thought my bridesmaids would. In the end, she ended up booking the venue but my bridesmaids did all the work. My husband’s stepmom didn’t even come (though she was going through some personal issues at the time, so I understand).

I know it’s considered tacky to throw your own shower, but I’m wondering if I should take matters into my own hands and ask one of my girlfriends to host? I would be totally willing to help with the planning and even cover some of the cost. As a soon to be first time mom, I just want to have the shower experience with all my friends and family! I know my own family will be hosting, but I have other friends and family where I live that aren’t invited to that shower and wouldn’t likely drive 4 hours for it anyway.

What should I do? Keep waiting and hope my MIL or husband’s stepmom step up? Or take matters into my own hands and ask a friend to do it?
