Home made baby food

Lindsey

I’ve recently been trying to make our baby food at home because it is SO much more cost effective and honestly I kind of enjoy it. That being said I’ve only done vegetables and mashed up part of a banana because for some reason fruits seem to be intimidating. Any tips on it or should I stick with buying store made fruit baby food

I'm not sure I'm much help as I've only done a few. I've done peaches, bananas, apples and blueberries. I peeled them (if needed) cut them up a little then put them in the food processor. They didn't really need water added as they already contain a lot of water. I did boil the apple slices to soften them first before throwing them into the food processor. My little one really likes when I add some blueberries to the applesauce.

I do apples And do a gentle boil for ten minutes and then put in my bullet blender with a little water! Good idea to add blueberries, I’ll have to try :)

I got a baby food maker off Facebook marketplace and it’s awesome! You chop the fruit or veg, pop it in and it steams it first, then you blend it. I’ve done sweet potato with quinoa flakes and cinnamon, raspberries with breastmilk, banana and hemp seeds and just did pears this morning to help him poop! He’s loved it all.

If you have a grater use the very thin side so it comes out as a purée so easy to do it with apples, pears etc

I made all the baby food for my now 4 year old and have started doing so for my son as well. Peaches, apples, mango, pears and other hard fruits should all be steamed to get them to be soft enough for a stage 1 purée. Pretty much steam everything except banana and avocado. I’m going to be using my instant pot to steam this go around!

Pears and mangos are honestly super easy ( well cutting the mango is a feat) but making it is super easy! I’m trying blueberries next!

I find fruits the easiest! We’ve done peach, apple sauce, blueberries, banana. Avacado. Chicken and beef puree ( they are still quite textured unless u add tons of water but I feel that’s good!) and egg. Lentils ( good source of iron) carrot and oatmeal baby cereal we tried once. We haven’t done a lot of veggies besides the lentil! I was recommended by the health nurses to do high iron foods once or twice daily such as beans, lentils or egg. Or meat. Also keep in mind that there are two types of iron... ones in meat and egg are more absorbed I believe than the bean or veggie ones! We want to try soon.... sweet potato and pears and beans! And I’m trying to think of more veggies to try? Any ideas?

Broccoli is a good one as it’s high iron - any green veg really. We have done a whole range and our boy loved them all.

Fruits are really simple. I’ve done pears, apples, peaches, papaya, and blueberries. I also just slow cooked a chicken and purées the meat down with the stock I made from it so he now has chicken to mix with his vegetables. He loves it.
