Toddler choking?

Question

When a toddler chokes on his food, can still breathe and everything just chokes like us adults do when eating fast. What should be done? Should I pat his back, rub it, make him look up? Not sure what is suppose to be done. Just wondering because sometime my son eats too fast or with water he chokes a little. Thanks in advance

With my son I just kinda stand by and see if he can correct it himself. If it looks like he's struggling a little I'll pat his back and in a sense get ready for if I need to do the heimlich. But I've definitely learned to just stay calm, one time I freaked a little more than I should have and it caused him to freak out too which made it worse.

There is a difference between gagging and choking. If he is coughing loud, I let him handle it. Interfering can actually make it worse. But I’m always ready, incase he does need help.

If he’s coughing he can breathe. You just want to make sure he can clear out whatever it is. And make sure things that  are choking hazards are cut smaller. If he’s actually choking make sure you learn the Heimlich Maneuver and use that! Kids also have strong gag reflexes so they may gag, cough a lot while eating.

If you haven’t done so already look into a cpr and first aid class. But like the other commenter I stand by stay calm and if he corrects himself and is breathing then I leave him be. Usually right afterwards he tells me he’s ok.
