Can you get pregnant during your luteal phase(after egg has been released and dies)?

My family tells me that i can get pregnant at any time, but I think they just tell me that to scare me. Can you get pregnant on all days of the month?

It’s true, there is only about a week within your cycle that you can actually get pregnant, but it’s very hard to know for sure when that time is. You can only get pregnant when you are ovulating and the egg is still alive in you. No egg=no baby. Sperm however can live inside you for 5 days and be there waiting when the egg comes down. 
If you are not ready for a baby, just avoiding ovulation is a really BAD idea for birth control. 
The reason people say you can get pregnant at any time is because ovulation can be unpredictable, even if your cycle is consistent. The app shows you just an average. You have to very diligently track using ovulation test strips to know when yours is and even then is can surprise you. 
I tracked my ovulation for two years and it has been very consistent. But it only took one weird cycle and now I’m pregnant! I ovulated 7 days earlier then I expected, so I wasn’t even watching for it yet. 
My husband and I chose to use the tracking method for birth control because we wanted a kid eventually anyway, we were just casually trying to put it off a year or two for work. 
NOT recommended if you are not ok with a surprise baby. Listen to your family.

If you have confirmed ovulation and it is 36 or more hours after, then the egg is dead and you cannot get pregnant.
You need an egg to conceive.

If the egg is gone there is nothing to fertilize so therefore you can’t get pregnant. I think when most people say that they are referring to the fact that you do t always ovulate on CD14 so you may ovulate earlier or later than you think and end up pregnant during a different point in your cycle.
