IUD Insertion?

I'm considering getting an IUD, but want to know if the insertion is painful or not?

Ive had the Kyleena for about 3 weeks now. I’m liking it so far. Honestly for me, the insertion was very painful. It was like 2 very sharp pains but that was it. I would recommend taking some ibuprofen about 30 minutes prior to getting it. For about the next day or so I cramped but it was like period cramps. Now at week 3, my cramps have pretty much stopped but I’m still having some spotting and that’s kind of getting annoying. The spotting has gotten lighter so I’m hoping it will stop all together soon.
But I’m LOVING not having to remember to take a pill everyday

Ive had mirena for a year and i love it. I have heavy periods and mirena is fda approved to treat heavy periods. My periods stopped after month 4. Only side effect was 2 weeks of bad cramps. Insertion was like intense cramps i havent had kids. No pharmacy, no pills. I got it for free. We dont use condoms or pull out and i havent gotten pregnant. Ive even used antibiotics and meds dont interact with it. I love it!

Everyone is different. I had a numbing shot in my cervix when I got my Mirena IUD and I didn't even feel the insertion. After I stood up off the table I had some mild period Cramps though, but it's nothing compared to my normal menstrual cramps.

Everyone is different so your experience might be totally different. Mine was definitely painful but only for a couple minutes. Ive had three kids and the cramps are a lot like intense labor pains (it’s your uterus contracting). I think the biggest thing to help is to take pain meds 30 mins before and maintain consistent, deep breathing throughout the procedure. Two painful contractions (one for the dr to establish the position and depth of your uterus, one for placement) and that’s the worst of it. Period like cramps for a few days but pain meds and a heating pad help with that. Bleeding and tissue discharge are likely if you’re getting an iud that has hormones. After a few days/week you’re good and don’t have to mess around with bc anymore!

I’ve had Paragard (copper IUD) for almost 2 years. It was pretty painful when it was inserted. On a scale of 1 to 10, I’d say it was a 6. But the pain only lasted for a few seconds. I also had some cramping feelings for a couple days after it was inserted.

i got the mirena inserted today and the doctor talking you through the process is the most important part. i would say the most painful part is measuring and inserting the iud because that’s when the doctor is deep into your uterus. it feels like very strong period cramps during insertion. it’s a sharp pain, but for me - very manageable because i have such bad period cramps regularly. take some pain killers before hand to ease your body a bit and you should be fine. :)

Everyone is different. I had mine put in yesterday and was so nervous. I thought it was going to be terrible. The nurse was talking me through what the doctor was doing and what I would probably feel but I honestly didn’t feel anything. There was a point where the nurse made the comment of “wow, you must have a high pain tolerance. Most girls jump up off the table with that part.”

I got mirena and it was too big and had to be taken out and two years ago I got kyleena and it was the worst pain of my life. It’s okay now and I enjoy it but wow the pain was crazy.

I had to be dilated when getting it inserted , I had no pain medication, I’ve never had a kid but by far the worst pain I’ve ever felt , me and my mom almost passed out because it took multiple attempts to get it in , I was in there for a good 20 min. I felt crampy and had bad back pain for about a week . I love not having to remember to take a pill and I don’t notice it anymore , the only side effect which I think is from my iud is that I’m extremely tired all the time since I’ve gotten it and my anxiety has gotten slightly worse bur I’m only a month in

My IUD insertion was horrid. I passed out, threw up, I had to be wheeled out of the doctors office and took ibuprophen for a week. although everyone’s different I don’t think I could do it again.
