How does it work compared to the checks I just signed up for wic and have been using checks but I heard California is going to get wic cards now

Here in Virginia it works just like a debit card. When they print your receipt it will show you what you spent & what you have left or you can call the number on the back of the card and it will tell you your balance.

There’s an app you can use and you put in the card number and it will show the stuff you have still. When you get the card, you’ll need to activate it and make a PIN number for it. Like debit cards.. 
It’s super easy. The app lets you know what else you have on the card.
