Is your baby sitting up yet?

Question

My son's pediatrician said he needs to be sitting up at our next check up. He will be 6 months on the 17th. He tries to sit up but it's not looking good and I feel like he's behind...

Yeah what is this needs to be thing? Some babies don't sit up fully unsupported until 9 months, totally fine. Don't worry, my baby isn't sitting up fully unsupported yet either, he still wobbles.

For a few seconds. There no rule that baby needs to be sitting unsupported by 6 months, less than half do!

Ooo please, I think the main important thing is that he is trying and gaining the muscles. 
By chance is your pediatrician a parent themselves? I noticed a difference between the docs at our office based in if they have kids or not. Our main one just had a baby 4 months before me and at dd2 2 month appointment she said now I get why parents say they tried tummy time but their baby hates it.  🤣 it gies to show that they are told these standards but unless theyve been through sometimes they just don't always understand. 
For me it's like having an obgyn who has had a baby compared to not. 🤣 theres a difference

Yeah babies have their own schedules and hit their milestones on their own time. My pediatrician said pretty much what yours said, but just phrased it slightly differently. She said the next milestone will be sitting up and might be around that time. My son started sitting independently right before 6 months, but his older sister was closer to 6.5-7 months before she got it down 😂 for her 6 month pictures, me and her daddy kept just out of sight to catch her and prop her back in a seated position whenever she’d fall. 
As long as your baby is working on it, I don’t think there’s any cause for concern. Some of these babies will start walking at 9 months, some a year, and some might even be a 1.5 before they walk. I’ve known babies that cover the whole spectrum. Yours is fine, just try not to compare 😊

If hes trying to sit up I wouldn't worry about it... I know it's hard not to worry. We went to my daughters day care open house and one of the kids in her class can sit up crazy good and hes 6 months old. My daughter will be 6 months on the 19th of September and isnt any where near that. 
She can sit up in the tripod stance for a decent amount of time but without her hands supporting her... maybe a minute or two. 
In my opinion as long as he is attempting to sit up hes fine. Our pediatrician said that it's good to let them sit up and wobble. The wobbling let's them get a feel for how to correct themselves.

Mine is starting to but not only was I surprised our Pediatrician was surprised as well 
He is my 4th and the only one who started sitting up on his own this early
