Cervical dilation check

Today I think I’m getting my cervix checked for dialation. I use the word “think” because at my practice there’s 3 different delivery doctors, one of them told me that they start checking at 38 weeks (which I’m 38+4), but at my last apt another doctor made a comment along the lines of “if you want me to check next time”..... so I’m not sure if I am or not getting checked🤷🏼‍♀️

Anyways, I’m posting this because I’m SUPER curious and low key nervous to if it will hurt.. do they use the speculum to open up the vagina or do they just insert their finger(s)? FTM here🤰🏼
