You and your boyfriend are the only people who really know if this is something that will work with your relationship. I definitely know people who have played around with another person or people together and have been absolutely fine with it. 
I think the times it really causes trouble is when people have a relationship that is already in a rough spot and they try a threesome in an attempt to fix things or make things more exciting and it just ends up exacerbating problems that are already there. 
If this is something you and your boyfriend seem to be totally on the same page about, and you are good at communicating, I don’t see why it couldn’t be something you both enjoy. I had a threesome last summer.  I had very hard rules with it.   He wasnt to fuck her vaginally.  First time wasnt a problem at all.  Afterwards since it went well the idea of us all dating came up and we began a "throuple".

It’s just something you’re going to have to find out for yourself!! If he’s completely comfortable not having sex with the additional female that’s great but you will also have to make a conscious effort to not leave him out that’s all! I think it’s great you two can talk openly about it that’s a huge step right there and the first great step!
