Should pet stores be required to only sell items that are good for pets/be required to ensure new pet owners are purchasing the right set up for new pets?
Two part question...
Part one: should pet stores be required to only sell items deemed safe/good for pets? For instance fish are never supposed to be kept in fish bowls. Fish bowls restrict oxygen levels for fish, they’re often too small for fish to have enough room to live comfortably, they lack proper filtration, etc. yet fish are sold in fish bowls all the time. Another example is heat rocks for lizards. Heat rocks are unsafe for lizards as they can cause burns, they lead to unsafe temperatures in the cage, etc. yet these are widely sold as well. I’m sure there are other examples of items that are either unsafe or advised against for use that are still sold at many pet stores.
Part two: Should pet stores be required to make sure a new pet owner is purchasing the correct things needed before they leave the store with a pet? For instance if you are buying a fish, lizard, snake, etc. that requires a certain sized tank, certain things to keep it healthy like a heater, etc. should the pet store be required to make sure you are purchasing or have purchased the right things to take care of the pet correctly before selling you the pet?
This could be for any type of pet. I’m mainly asking because it seems so many pets live in poor conditions that aren’t good for them at all, especially pets confined to cages and tanks that are too small, are lacking the proper set up, etc. and needlessly suffer because of it.
