Two year old screaming bloody murder for bed time?!

Out of all the phases we have gone through this one is the absolute worse!! Lately our son will scream and cry as if he is terrified, I mean you would think someone is hurting him. He starts this as soon as we get him ready for bed and once we lay him down it's really on.

We've tried laying down with him, but he just thinks its playtime. We've showed him nothing is in his room. We've both laid him down separately and together. We've asked if there is anything special he wants to take with him and he doesn't. He already sleeps with a night light on, plus a light up buzz that he sleeps with. We've had come sit with us for 5 more minutes and that just seems to make it worse when we have to lay him down again.

I just don't get what it is. He's even doing it at nap time. We haven't changed anything, we don't ever watch anything scary around him. It's coming out of nowhere.
