Car seat: Infant or Convertible?

Question

First time mom here, completely overwhelmed with the amount of options for car seats. I was sure we were getting a convertible one, but then realized I won’t be able to take it out of the car as a carrier now I’m questioning it. Any thoughts?

I used an infant car seat with my January 2017 baby. I live where there a lot of snow and ice so if I slipped he’d be safe in the car seat than in my arms.  
I bought a cheap one because I prefer convertible car seats and didn’t use it long. I only used it until baby had better head control and the snow and ice was all melted.

If you want a convertible you can always just get a carrier and baby wear also.

I’d definitely go w an infant seat unless truly unaffordable/impossible for you to obtain. They fit the tiny babies a lot better and can click in/out of car seats and into strollers to make it a lot easier to move the baby around with little hassle/waking them up.

Infant seat is a must for me! Baby sleeps a lot and it's wonderful to have them keep sleeping on the go (move from car to stroller, for instance), or carry inside. You can buckle them outside of the car rather than fidgit with it in the car. I buy the convertible one around 2 years-- when baby outgrows the infant seat.

I used a travel system so she was able to sleep in the store and what not . It was so much easier that way rather than trying to put her in a carrier . I didn’t get a convertible one until she turned 1  or so. It was a great investment

I used an infant seat with my first and have no regrets. Makes everything overall easier. Using it for my second now too. I waited until he was unhappy with the bucket seat to switch, he was about 9 months by then. He was very interested in seeing the world, being held or sitting in carts upright, and even just leaving the bucket in the car and taking him out of it was difficult because of the angles.

With my son we got an infant seat and an extra base for my husband’s car. It was super helpful, especially during the winter months (he was a December baby) because we could put a blanket over his bottom half to keep him warm and not have to worry about the rush to/from the car without a jacket on (our garage isn’t attached to our house so we park outside). Once he was about 7 months we switched to convertible seats because he was just too big for the infant seat. We did register for both the infant seat and two convertible seats though, because even if someone didn’t buy us the convertible seats, we would get the completion discount on them and be able to buy them cheaper! I plan to do the same with baby #2.

Convertible. 
They wake up every time you try to get the infant seat out anyway so then you are lugging it around while carrying a baby or baby is screaming because they are buckled in and awake and want to be held. I pop them out and wear them. Leaves hands free for other things like my other children or bags or shopping.
I also feel less comfortable holding that heavy seat in the snow and ice and wind going up and down stairs to my car. Winter lasts forever here and is brutal. 
Bonus- it lasts longer. My 3.5 year old is still in her original seat and still rear facing, though shes starting to push the weight limit and will probably be turned around in under a year because of it.

Infant seats are definitely more convenient for the first few months. My two older kids have used them for the first 6 months and then I switched to the convertible seat. One thing to be aware of is that you MUST switch them to a convertible seat (but keep them rear facing until at least 2 years, preferably closer to age 4) after their first birthday. Even if your baby is technically small enough to fit in an infant seat, the curvature isn’t good for their spines after the one year mark.
