Should everyone at least know how to hand sew??

Question

I’m in interior design and we’re required to make mini curtains for an assignment. We have to use fabric. It’s no problem for me because I quilt sometimes, but everyone else in that class doesn’t even know how to hand sew. That would be fine, but none of them are even trying to attempt to sew. It bothers me because it’s kinda a basic skill I was taught since I was able to use a needle safely.

It's certainly a useful and cost-saving skill for sure. Seems odd that interior design students aren't interested in learning it, though.

I mean its great that you know but how do you expect others to know? My mom didnt sew and therefore didnt teach me so I wont be able to teach my daughter. For what you're doing it makes sense they would know it and it would come in handy sometimes but that's what professional tailors are for 🤷🏼‍♀️

I think there's an inherent difference in being able to sew a hole shut or a button back on a shirt versus knowing how to hand sew. There's actual stitches and differences between needles and threads etc. that one needs to learn. I can sew a hole shut on something that doesn't matter or sew a button back on, but it's not going to look pretty if were to try and hem something or make something out of a square of fabric. I CAN use a sewing machine well enough, but I can't hand sew.

I don't think it's necessary but it's super helpful. But I wouldn't trust my husband around fabric adhesive. Although my dad can whip up a pair of pants like nobody's business. He was very poor and lived on his own for many years so he learned to do for himself. He sewed my baby a quilted sleeping bag.

I don't think so.
I grew up with a mom who never sewed, my dad actually taught me the very little I know.
I got an older sewing machine with our house. I've used a few times but it kept jamming on me and I have zero idea how to fix it, and I doubt we will ever take it in. I'd love to learn, but I doubt I ever will.

There's a basic side to it and then there's advanced skills. 
I assume you mean the very basic aka not being afraid of taking the needle in hand and pushing it into the fabric, and I totally agree - everyone should be able to pick up the tools. It might turn out ugly, but it should hold up, and everyone should be able to do that. 
On the other hand, sewing well is an advanced skill and it shouldn't be expected from anyone but tailors and fashion designers etc, who actually work with fabric and sewing regularly.

People have different skills... but it's weird to me. I've been handsewing since I was quite young...

Yes and no. Yes because its great to be able to sew things back together and create things but no because its not a skill you will need in life or death situations. I took fashion design in high school where i learned to sew with and without a machine and im really glad i did.
