Timing of nursing?

We were told to feed our newborn every 3 hours during the day and every 4 hours at night. What I didn’t ask was when does the clock start over? Does the 3 hours start over when she starts to nurse or when she finishes nursing. 
For example, if she starts nursing at 12pm and it lasts 30 minutes, do I feed her again at 3pm or 3:30pm?

It usually goes by the start time. Newborns should be fed on demand whenever they’re hungry and you might find baby will want to start cluster feeding or eating every hour. This is normal and they do so to establish your supply.

It’s from the start of the feed. But use those times as an “at least” stopgap measure for the first few sleepy weeks, not the rule about exactly when to feed. Most babies will let you know when they’re hungry, and they’re easiest to feed when mildly to moderately hungry instead of crying hungry. Go ahead and feed anytime before the 3-4 hour mark if she’s stirring, putting hands to mouth, etc.

Babies can't tell the time... They're hungry when they're hungry 😊 trying to extend the time between feeds because they haven't quite gone 3 hours could reduce milk supply and cause more tears for baby and I'm sure eventually you. Babies also don't just breastfeed for hunger... Thirsty, tired, need a cuddle, comfort, scared.
Almost 4 months in feeding my second and I completely go with 'if in doubt, wack it out' my LO gets fed ALOT. Definitely not overweight, she just needs me 😊
