Hospital asking for pre-payment for delivery ??

Question

The hospital put together an estimate for delivery and is trying to get me to pre-pay a little over $2,000 NOW... but I’m not due till November 29th. I feel like they are just trying to get the cash $ that I would pay to my OBGYN or other doctors that I’m currently seeing (due to being high risk) before they can collect. Because if I go pay the hospital, then we meet our insurance deductible and then insurance has to pay any further bills. Seems odd to me for 2 reasons... I had my son at this same hospital and this NEVER came up with him and why in the world would I give them this $$ when there is no guarantee that I will definitely have my baby at this hospital?? What if I have a home birth, or have to go to another hospital? I’m high risk... I could end up being flown to Denver... 
Anyone else having a hospital as for pre-payment???

So 1 month before I was due with my son our insurance changed unbeknownst to me (because my damn husband didn’t go to his enrollment meeting) and I was called by the hospital telling me I owed $6k. I asked what they’d do if I didn’t/couldn’t pay it before delivery. Nothing. They can’t turn you away because you haven’t paid. I just wouldn’t pay anything on it and wait until you’re billed after delivery.

This is crazy A you have insurance B you do NOT have to pay anything if your not even there at the time and C it is illegal to deny medical treatment to anyone regardless of finances . I would def call your ins ! Also If they are being so demanding on you paying tell them you can set up a payment plan and you will pay X amount every month you tell them how much you can pay . This is not like your going in for voluntary surgery that is when they do ask for money upfront before the procedure you having a baby ! Best of luck !

Mine offered me a 20% discount if I paid ahead of time and based it on my current deductible amount left - no thanks I’ll be getting several other bills from ultrasounds etc before then and since I have a baby about due not quite in a spot where I want to drop 2k before even going to the hospital 😕

Its scary that you guys all have to pay so much for hospitals. In new Zealand its free unless you go private and thats without insurance.

We have insurance but hadn’t met our deductible yet. So we just had to pay it up and now everything is covered. I do think it’s crazy to ask for payments upfront. BUT I’m glad to not get hit with a huge bill afterwards.

Just tell them you can't pay until after delivery 🤷 they legally can't deny you if you go in labor and are admitted. They might be trying to get the lump sum of a chunk of it because some insurances restart in Dec/Jan when the *New cycle starts. At least that's what I've been told here in Va. But honestly I wouldn't pay until you've seen a paper bill after insurance has paid their part

I didn’t have to prepare, but with my insurance paying 90% of delivery, I still owed $7000!!

Kristin what hospital in Colorado? I'll be delivering in one of those hospitals as well. They never asked me for any payment before my due date when I delivered my first. They only sent a bill after baby was born....that's weird. 
I wonder if we have the same insurance.

Our OB sets payment plan at first appt! They found our insurance max out of pocket for the year and set up monthly payments to be fully paid at 28 weeks. Seems aggressive but that’s how they do it.
