Gift ideas for 1st birthday for a boy?

Our good friends’ son is turning 1 in December and we are trying to find some gift ideas for him. Something in the $30-$40 range. Would appreciate any recommendations from those of you who already have a child that age and can give input on what sorts of items would be helpful. Thank you!

lego blocks for my son. He is almost 16 months and rarely a day goes by that the legos don't come out! Not sure price range though. I don't think they're very expensive.

Clothes, there's a Sloth toy (I think VTech) that my daughter (1) & son (3) love. Chase Me Casey toy, books, many different VTech toys out there or money towards something like a trip to the zoo or children's museum, etc.

I’ve been buying all the kids a personalized wooden puzzle that they set the letters of their name into for their first birthdays. I also buy them a book or two that are interactive.
