Gift ideas for 1st birthday for boy?

Our good friends’ son is turning 1 in December and we are trying to find some gift ideas for him. Something in the $30-$40 range. Would appreciate any recommendations from those of you who already have a child that age and can give input on what sorts of items would be helpful. Thank you!

Honestly at 1 they don’t care about toys you can get him books a small educational toy something along thise lines. My go to are clothing for the next upcoming season it’s my go to for my son, for his first birthday I got him a small educational counting and abc toy and clothing for fall and winter. I’ve done this up til recently when he turned 3 in July. I do this for Christmas as well.

I’d say something that stacks up, like blocks or even those one little kid legos that are big pieces so they can’t choke, (can’t remember the name), 1 is the age where they start learning to stack and build, it really helps with their motor skills and development too. I’d also recommend a book, my son loves looking at the pictures in books, and it’s never too early to start a child’s book collection, and the parents can read it to him to help development. 
They also make those coloring books that have the special water marker, where the picture only shows up with the marker and the marker doesn’t leave marks anywhere else, so they can’t color on the walls or anything, my son is obsessed with his.
