How long did you have to isolate with your preemie?

My water broke at 29 weeks and I am currently in the hospital trying to hold off labor until 34 weeks (October 31st). How long will we need to isolate our baby after he comes home? Cold and flu season is just starting which makes me nervous. We were hoping to be able to travel 2 hours back home for Christmas. He will be 8 weeks old at that point.

We were told to limit people holding him as long as humanly possible. I’m especially cautious in any get togethers with kids because schools just breed germs. We’ve been to a couple family things and were really upfront with everyone ahead of time and told them we weren’t letting people hold him or get close because his immune system isn’t strong enough. Everyone was very understanding and no one pushed us or gave us any grief. The only people who have held our son are us and the two grandmas. We don’t even let our 7 year old close to him until he’s taken a bath after school.

I made my ￼ immediate ￼family wait one month for visit. I was told by a pediatrician that there more at risk for catching something because there still underdeveloped. I made everyone else wait almost two months and no children till the full two months after her shots.

My 30 weeker came him in September ‘17 and we never “isolated” him. We were advised not to because they do need some exposure to germs. With that being said we were also advised to not let people touch him or hold him other than people we trust and know for a fact aren’t sick. My boy never got sick until almost 2 years old and even then they were just small colds.

My LO was born at 34 weeks (he is turning 3 months this week) and he has an auto-immune disease, so we have to isolate as much as possible. Doc said family gatherings are fine as long as no one unvaccinated or under the age of 4 is in direct contact with me or him he should be fine, which is difficult since he has three siblings, two of which are under 4! With the older three, they were isolated until 6 weeks of age.

I had a 32 weeker and we didn’t isolate at all.

I was told by the neonatologist to avoid large groups through the flu season, including family holiday parties.  It will suck, but that’s life.  His immune system isn’t as strong as a normal newborn and so we need to be careful.  Plus I know SO’s family will insist on passing him around and he’s too much of a pushover to say no.
