Would you break up?

If your boyfriend of 5 years used to be emotionally and physically abusive but stopped and has changed for years and is now loving and never abusive and you love him would you break up?

I would’ve left him when he was abusive, no one can redeem themselves from that in my eyes

Have you been together this whole five years and he’s just miraculously stopped abusing you? Has he received any treatment in therapy? How long has it been since the last time he hit you or hurt you emotionally? 
The thing about abusers is that if they are not in therapy, taking steps to change their behavior for good and resolve the root causes of their behavior, they will most likely do it again someday. The way abusers cope with stress is by abusing people. So maybe life has been relatively easy-going and he hasn’t had tons of stress, but he could be triggered at any time. It’s really completely up to you if you want to stick around and find out about that, but I personally would not.￼

I would have left when it was actively happening. I also don't think I would ever trust them to not be abusive again.

I probably wouldn't now if he's completely stopped but I definitely would have while it was still happening

It’s completely up to you, you’re the one who knows your relationship best. If you stayed through the bad and know they are better and have changed and have proven to you that it’s worth it to stay then it’s your decision.
