Iui or Timed sex?

Been ttc 2.5 years with no Male factor infertility. I do only have 1 tube and stage 2 endometriosis

We have unexplained infertility and tried the medicated cycles for 3 times with one cycle being monitored (they wanted to make sure the letrozole was working).  Luckily for us those 3 cycles only cost us $150 total for our one ultrasound (insurance covered the medication) but we are moving on to iui this cycle which will cost us about $1300. We just wanted to try the least expensive option first. 
Since your options are both expensive I voted for iui if you have the money. If it works, great! And if it doesn’t work it may give you peace of mind knowing you skipped the timed intercourse step. 
Alternatively, after you have an iui cycle I’m assuming it will be monitored to know if you are responding to the medication?  Assuming everything is well with the meds is there an option to then switch to unmonitored timed intercourse?  Will it drop the cost of it significantly enough to feel like it’s worth it?
Of course I hope there won’t be a next cycle and whatever you decide to do this cycle works out!

I’m sure this is a stupid question, but why do you have to pay for timed sex? Don’t you just time it yourself?
