I like first names to be wayyyy out there. Not in the top 1000 but 10000 even better. And middle names I prefer not anywhere near the top 100 but I’m less strict about because I like to make them significant to our story.

I shoved popular out the window long time ago... I’m having mums last name (my old last name before I changed it)  as our babies middle name as she passed away last year and it will be special . We’re still working first name out and will have fathers last name so __(name)__rodriguez__(surname)__

Both my children have uncommon first and very uncommon middle names as I am in childcare and wanted names i hadn't heard before at work.

We tend to choose weird middle names. Unusual firsts with weird middles. 
We do look at popularity data for first names, but have never bothered to look at popularity for middle names, because with the type of middles names we like, it isn’t relevant.

I chose names I like. I have no concern about popularity or being unique because quite frankly I don't really care about what other people do or don't do, so I'm not going to try choose a name that's either popular or "unique for my special little snowflake" either.

To me, a middle name is something I choose for significance (like a family name), so popularity is irrelevant.
Also, 99% of people your kids meets in life won't even know that middle name, so it really doesn't matter if it's common imo.
