What do you think about promise rings?

My bf and I have been talking a lot about getting engaged. He’s my high school sweetheart and with the amount of couples I’ve seen getting married recently, I just want him to pop the question already.. yesterday was my birthday but since I’m in a military program, I can’t just up and leave when I want to. The next time I’ll see him is November 2nd & I convinced him to tell me what was the gift he got me since by then, it won’t be my bday anymore. He told me it was a promise ring and it kind of threw me off. He says he doesn’t want to get an engagement ring or anything until he’s spoken to my parents and his. Therefore, the ring is a “promise” that it will happen. I’m completely fine with the idea of speaking to our parents first, but why get a promise ring? It just feels so high school/middle school for me 🥴 to be frank, I hate the idea & I can’t even wear jewelry so I really don’t see the point..

I thinking it's a cop out. It's a way for the guy to string you along until something better comes along. Then he can be like " it's not like we were engaged or anything". Promise ring or no, you're still just a girlfriend.

I think they’re cute for kids who believe that they’ll get married some day, but not for adults. If you’re an adult, either you’re ready for marriage or not.

Like you said it's too high school ish for me. Like if you're adults why not just an actual engagement ring? Even if the engagement is longer than usual.

I never understood them either. To me, it's a promise to make a promise. Which makes no sence. 
And I saw so many promise rings in high-school that never turned into anything.

i also find it kind of ridiculous. why not wait until you're ready to actually propose? if you're dating to marry, there's no need for a promise ring lol.

I got a promise ring but we do it a little differently culturally, me and my husband are Turkish so a week before our engagement the males family and the girls family get together and put on a promise ring it’s a small ceremony and a week later we have the engagement so it’s officially pre engagement

Lol I did in fact get a promise ring in hs which made perfect sense then, because it's like- yes I'm committed to you but yes I also realize getting engaged would be a little crazy right now. But if you're adults I dont get it!!
