Can I fight him on this?

My ex says the SECOND my son turns two he’s going to turn his seat around. I want to wait until my son is bigger and not go by age (because I actually care about his safety. Unlike my ex who just cares about what’s easy for HIM 😡) 
Anyways I’ve told him that my son WILL be remaining rear facing for as long as he can and he keeps saying “not while he’s with me.” 
If I have sole legal custody can I fight him on that?

I haven’t been divorced so maybe I’m missing something, but if you have sole custody, then any time you allow your child to be with your ex is at your discretion isn’t it? If so, then don’t allow him to take the child unless he can prove the seat is still rear-facing.

Not really unfortunately. As long as the seat is safe for him to be forward facing😞 maybe send him a few links why rear facing is safer he may understand more. X

You could try, but if your son has met the minimum weight requirement, I don’t think there is a legal argument. Longer rear facing is a recommendation, not a requirement. I think it would be really difficult to enforce that as well.

I would ask a lawyer but if you have sole custody I would say yes you can fight him.

Is there a court agreement? Does he have time set out in the agreement that is his time? If yes, then you cannot withhold on those days. If there is no agreement, and you're considering yourself primary caregiver without a court order, you can withhold. However, he can take you to court for withholding and if your son has met the legal requirements for forward facing, your reason to withhold will not stand up in court. 
Your best bet is to show him crash test videos of children who forward face early versus extended rear facing. Those are hard to argue with. Unfortunately, if he has court ordered access and not breaking the law, there's nothing you can do.

If you are the sole custody holder you can dictate if he can or can’t see his son. If he is not following the rule of safety you set forward you can revoke his visitations until you son is able to be forward facing by your standards. You have no legal recourse but as the sole guardian and the controller of his best interest you can revoke visitations until to deem he’s going to be safely transported.
