I use receiving blankets for burp cloths and I keep washcloths at change tables for little spit ups and rogue pee clean up.

Receiving blankets lol.    I got a TON of them for my shower. And found myself reaching for them.  They're bigger and like I said you'll prob have a overabundance of them as well.

I got to Joann and buy heaps of flannel nursery fabric. Cut it into squares and use fabritack for the edges. Soooooo much cheaper! Also buy a couple packs of washrags from Walmart.

In the beginning, use cloth diapers. They absorb a lot of spit up, and if something tragic happens to them, you're not super attached. Later, when spit up is less of a concern, the homemade flannel ones are the best.

My favorites were Aden and Anais burpy bibs! I love that they could be snapped on like a bib. We use them in the car still to protect the carseat straps from spitup which happens occasionally while driving. 
I also had some that were made from prefold cloth diapers and they were great as well, but obviously didn’t have the bib function  :)

Honestly anything nearby 😂. I have some burp cloths but a lot of the time I end up grabbing one of the many swaddles people gave us. She seems to like those because they’re soft. But she never spits up much if at all while I’m burping her (she just spits up if I don’t burp her) so it doesn’t really matter all that much.
