Anyone know how to refinish furniture?

I have this kitchen cart/island on wheels that I want to redo. I have watched several videos on YouTube, but I'm still lost and some of the videos are contradicting another. I figured with so many people, I may be able to get some tips here. 
This is what it looks like currently. Ignore the mess, I use this as one of my crafting desks.

This is what I want to do. Stain the top to make it darker, paint the cabinets a slate blue, and replace the drawer pulls.

Any tips? I am completely clueless and don't want to mess it up. I want it to look good and last.

You have to sand it down first

First figure out if it's real wood or press board. If it's not real wood then I dont recommend sanding it. Just get a spray primer and paint. 
If it is real wood, you should remove the paint first by either chemical or sanding. Or both. Using paint remover then sanding will give better results that just one. Then you can repaint.

okay look you first take all the drawers out, take some scotch tape around the areas you first want to paint. 
then you sand the parts you want while making sure the stuff you want to paint isn’t dirty i personally think it helps. 
while you get done sanding, wipe away excess, stain making sure the parts you don’t want to paint. WHEN IT DRIES
cover the top with a thick tarp making sure it’s completely sealed from the paint. 
paint the areas you’d like and the drawers SEPARATELY
you can also go to home depot for the paint. 
hobby lobby or michaels for the pull out drawers because they have a variety of crafts you could add 
or unless you have a joannes that works too!
