How to know how much you’re producing

Morgan

How do you ladies know that you’re producing enough milk? Outside of pumping and measuring, how do I know I’m giving my baby enough? She’s seems to ALWAYS want to nurse. She maybe goes 1-1.5 hours between feedings during the day (at night she goes 3-4 hours). It makes me feel like she isn’t getting enough...

So pumping is not a good measure of supply. A weighted feed at a lactation consultant’s office is accurate, however, if your baby has sufficient wet diapers a day and is gaining weight she is getting enough for sure.

It's super normal for newborns to feed that much (it's called cluster feeding when it's pretty much back to back), it's how they establish your supply. It also happens for growth spurts and developmental leaps, some days they're barely off the boob! As long as baby is gaining weight and having plenty of wet nappies it's all good, you're going great :) x

Counting wet diaper and steady weight gain. There is rarely a textbook nurser. Mine nibs here and there for comfort all of the time, and actually EATS every couple hours. If a breast is nearby, he wants it. Nursing is SO much more than just filling up a stomach on an evenly spaced time throughout the day.

To add to PP (which I agree with all that) she might just want the comfort of nursing. Or shes in a growth spurt and is hungry. Eventually by my second I realized if i just let him nurse pretty much constantly around the witching hours (for us like 4-6) it would keep him calm AND he'd sleep a little better by the time i put him down around 630
