What do you put on your child in the car seat in the winter?

I have an almost 14 month old and it’s starting to get cold outside and I know you can’t put jackets on in the car. So I’m wondering what I should put on him? I don’t want him to get sick. It even makes me nervous going to and from the car without a jacket... 
Last year when it was winter he was in the infant seat so I just used the bunting bag which was perfect!

Light jacket/hoodie under the winter coat. Take the coat off in the car and then strap in.

I just layer. A sweater and their regular coat. Then once in the car they take the coat off and just wear their sweater.

He can wear a fleece jacket just not a puffy or bulky jacket. They also make special coats to be worn with car seats, just google car seat coats.

I'm having the same issue, were just outside of Toronto so it gets really friggin cold here!
Columbia and north face both make thin snowsuit that are apparently pretty warm and carseat safe.
I was just looking at getting one for my 14 month old.

I just take my kid’s jackets off before buckling them in.

I've seen some ponchos you can put over the kid in the car seat. 
I gave my son a thick blanket ,light hoodie and beanie hat on to stay warm

You start the car so it starts to warm up. You take baby to car in their coat, get in car, take their coat off, buckle them in, and then if you want put a blanket or coat on their lap. Many steps but worth it and safest.

there are these cute fluffy full body onesies usually animal themed. and they are so cute and comfy oh my gosh.
you can buy a size bigger and dress your baby in layers under it and maybe throw on an extra pair of hand mitts and a blanket on their lap.
it’s more convenient than a jacket because it’s full body so their head, toes and hands are covered too.
and did I mention how cute they are omgggggg i’m stocking up on a lot of them for my baby
