Birthmarks?

So I've always wondered why some people have birthmarks and some don't. What causes them and why are some different colors. Mine is super dark and I've always hated it because it felt weird.

In my culture, they say that your family from your previous life marks you and when you are reborn the mark stays on you, that way they know you were theirs previosuly. I don't know how to explain it, I'm Asian by the way.

I have a tramp-stamp birth mark. It's really light. I treat it like a rickshaw (sp?). My boyfriend sees the moon, I see a mangled butterfly. Others just see a blob :P

Idk what causes them though.

I have a raspberry on the back of my beck or did when I was younger. My husband has a cowboy hat on his back and our son has no birth marks.

I have a very light, barely visable these days actually, on my inner mid-forearm, one on the left side of my right knee, and I have this little red "mole/freckle" under my eye. I've always been so interested in birthmarks. It's so neat.

I have a strawberry birthmark on my thigh that has faded as I got older. I have a cafe-au-lait birthmark above my belly button.
There are two types of birthmarks: vascular - these involve blood vessels not forming correctly or being bunched together  and pigmented - where there is too much pigment located in one spot.
Usually they are not harmful, but you should always check your body and let your doctor know of any changes.

I have a ton of freckles and a few moles. A lighter brown patch on my lower backish area (where the doc gives you shots in your hip). Then I have a big red one on the back of my neck. Half in my hair, half under my hair line. Dad has the same. Mom, my sister, and my brother don't have it. I also have a light red patch on my forehead. It used to be way darker when I was a baby. Now at 25 it's barely visable until I get mad. Then it turns bright red again.

I have 2.  A pink one on my lower back and a brown one on my left hip. My husband has an awesome one that looks like a howling wolf on his shoulder.
