Birth story - it’s finally my time to share my story

K

I went into my midwife appointment on October 30th for my 36 week appointment (I was 36weeks & 2days) when my midwife measured my uterus she said that I was measuring further behind then she’d like to see, she ordered an ultrasound. Luckily I could go home and shower and get ready before going. I got the ultrasound and the doctor had to review it and then came to talk to me, he started to tell me that my fluid level was really low (3.9) and that this baby needed to be delivered either tonight or tomorrow and if not then for sure by 37 weeks (which would have been Nov 4th.) by c section because he’s breech, I also have a heart shaped uterus (Bicornuate Uterus.) He then tells me that I need to go straight to Labor and Delivery to be further checked out and possibly admitted. I call my fiancé and mom crying because I’m so excited but so scared because it’s all happening so fast and I inform then that this baby is coming sooner then we all thought. I get to Labor and Delivery and the lady who is checking me in makes sure that I know that shes admitting me to stay until this baby comes. I get into my room, they hook me up to the machines to monitor me and some of my family comes by to see me. My sister came by and painted my nails and toenails for me because I really wanted them done before I had my son, she’s awesome! Then my mom came as well as my finances mom and sister, there wasn’t much to do besides wait. They ordered another ultrasound to check him out but told me that he was coming tonight! I was so nervous and almost passed out when she put the saline through my IV. My heart rate was really high for about an hour.. Then they came back and said that the C-Section was scheduled for 11am on 10/31. Halloween comes around and I’m ready but scared for what’s to come. They take me in for the ultrasound and it takes the doctor 4 hours to be able to give us her final answer about when this baby was for sure coming, they came back and told me that they’re going to hold off on the C Section and that I’ll be there another day. My fiancé had left to go home to get things ready for our hospital stay and to shower so I was alone for a few hours. The nurse came in and looked very excited, she said so this baby is being delivered tonight at 9pm, the doctor finally got to get a good look at the ultrasound and his umbilical cord is really low in your cervix so if my water was to break then I could lose him. She said my fluid level is still low and hadn’t gone up since yesterday and that he was going to grow a lot better on the outside because it seems that he had stopped growing inside and was only measuring 33 weeks and around 4lbs. I called my fiancé and let him know and then it was just a waiting game from there. My mom, his mom and his sister all arrived around the time he did and they came at 9pm to take me back to the operating room. It is FREEZING back there and I’m already shaking uncontrollably and then my boobs start leaking everywhere as she’s putting in the spinal and it only works on my left side but it kept making my left leg hurt and spasm when she tried to get it to my right side, she tried one more time after my left side was all good and numb and they laid me down on the table and laid me on my right side to get it to my side and it worked! They lay me down and hook me up to the monitors and put the towel up and the anesthesiologist is telling me everything they doctor is doing, she says oh there’s his feet and asks if my fiancé wants to watch, he then watches the doctor go all in with her elbow to get his head out of the top of my uterus for a good minute and watches his son come into the world, he wasn’t crying and they took him back to get cleaned up and I start hearing him scream, I have tears rolling down my face and am still shaking uncontrollably but am so proud of myself. The c section wasn’t as bad as I thought. They stitched me up and I heard them put the staples in and then they brought him to me to see and I couldn’t control myself I was crying so hard, he was so beautiful and perfect. They put me on the bed to wheel me out and took me back to my room, my mom looked so proud of me and was asking how I was doing, they took me to the NICU to see him because they had to put him on the CPAP machine because he wasn’t fully breathing good enough on his own. They then took me down a level to my next room and I don’t remember much after that besides how weird it was to still not be able to feel my legs or move them on my own. The nurses helped me to the bathroom and showed me what to do and then they had me start pumping. I got 40 oz my first time and was very excited, the nurses couldn’t stop saying how awesome it was. They took it to him in the NICU and we were able to go up and see him in the morning. My beautiful Bentley McKay was born at 9:20 PM on 10/31/19 weighing 5lbs 5oz and 18.5 inches long💙 He is off of the CPAP machine but is on the nasal cannula to help his oxygen levels. Going home without him has not been easy but I am glad that he is in good hands. I also was informed that for all of my future pregnancies because of the shape of my uterus I will never have a vaginal delivery or make it to full term.
