Throwing own baby shower

I started thinking a lot about my baby shower. My family is way down in Florida and I'm up here in Massachusetts. My husband's family is all in New York. My mil mentioned to mh about hosting one for me, but it would be in New York and pretty much any friends I have in the area won't be able to make that kind of trip for a short event. So is it tacky if I host my own "baby celebration"? It would be coed and pretty small and likely at our home.  Thoughts?
