Should foster parents get maternity leave when they have a newborn?
I didn’t know about this until I worked in daycare because my mom was a stay at home mom and foster mom but if you are a foster parent and a newborn baby is placed in your home and you work, you do not get maternity leave. So even if the baby is 3 days old, they have to go straight to daycare.
You get maternity leave because you need time to heal and bond with your baby. But I’m thinking about the babies. They’re born and taken from the only thing they’ve ever known and then they are immediately put into a loud environment with (in our case) 7 other babies for their daycare teachers to take care of so they get small amounts of 1 on 1 time. I don’t think that’s fair to them. We as daycare teachers talked about this and agreed and we tried to give him so much love when we could. My coworkers were amazing, and one of them donated her breast milk to this baby. I didn’t know that was allowed either but DHS actually supported the foster mom using donated breast milk to feed him.
