Virginity is a social construct?

Why do people say that? I mean... it’s a real thing. Your doctor has to know if you’ve had sex or not in order to help you with std testings, birth control options, etc. So if you’ve had sex, you’re not a virgin anymore. You’re now responsible for those medical things regarding your body. And if you haven’t had sex, you’re a virgin 🤷🏽‍♀️ what am I not getting here?

Like?? It’s important to distinguish if you’ve had sex or not to a doctor and to other people you’re going to have sex with!! It applies to both men and women. STDs and pregnancies is why... nothing about a woman’s worth.

They’re not talking about having had, or not had, sex. They’re talking about the term “losing” your virginity - aka losing a part of yourself, your “purity” or being “unholy” or “unclean” because of your sexual choices.

Yes there is a difference between having sex and not having sex 🙄 of course you should tell your doctor. Saying it’s a social construct has nothing to do with not telling your doctor or pretending you have or haven’t had sex.
Virginity is a social construct because the term wasn’t around forever. It was created in order to try and keep women pure until marriage. It was only used for women not for men to put them down and keep them to an unfair standard. You don’t “lose your virginity.” You literally lose nothing just have a new experience. Some may argue it has to do with the hymen but the hymen can break during other activities. Virginity is a made up word. Nobody is saying there isn’t a difference between having had and not having sex. There are some great articles on the origin of the words. Google it if you’re curious!

Yes it's important to always tell your doctor things like this, it's between you and your doctor. Because there absolutely no way your doctor can just look at your vagina and surrounding areas to tell if you have had sex or not, nor how often or with how many you potentially have been with. 
Sadly in many cultures it's the most important thing in the world that the girl/woman is a virgin/untouched, and she has to bleed on her wedding night to prove that she was in fact a virgin. There was even a post here this week about a woman who were about to be married, but not a virgin, that wondered how she could fake it so her husband to be wouldn't harm her for not being a virgin.

A doctor cant look at your downstairs and determine if you had sex or not... virginity in the social sense is a social construct... just because someone has sex doesnt make the "lose their virginity"... you physically didnt lose anything.. you're not impure or unclean... if you are sexually active then yeah tell your doctor but he cant just look at you and determine if you are a virgin...

Some people don’t see virginity as an actual thing, they view it as purity and innocence and some may say that if you aren’t married before sex then you are “ruined”. In this case it is just a social construct

I think lots of people who say virginity is a social construct also consider what defines losing your virginity means to different people. Examples: Does oral sex count? What if it’s “just the tip”? Etc
