Jaundice and bloody nipples connection?

Question

FTM and my baby is 5 days old today. At her check up she had high bilirubin and I’m wondering if my nipples bleeding and her getting some of that blood in feedings could be the cause?? I know I shouldn’t be bleeding, but Had a rough first few days breastfeeding and we’re getting our stride but nipples still need to heal and get used to her super strong suck.

Your bleeding nipples won’t affect it but since you had a rough few days and most likely not latching well and thus not getting enough to eat that can contribute my doctor had me supplement at the breast for a few days and also gave me a prescription for Newman’s 2% cream which was a godsend when my nips were cracking

Bleeding nipples won’t cause jaundice. However, that’s usually a sign that baby isn’t latching right.  The more/better baby eats, the quicker they reduce the bilirubin in their system.  I’d work with a lactation consultant to make sure you and baby are getting the latch correct and there aren’t any issues with a lip or tongue tie.  I’ve been there and bleeding nipples are the worst!!  Hopefully, with a better latch baby will reduce the bilirubin and you won’t have as painful nipples!
