Sleeping in big boy bed?

Question

How old was your toddlers when you started transitioning? My son will be 2 years in march and I want to start trying to get him to sleep in a big boy bed. How did you make it easier and get them to sleep through the night?

We moved my son about 18 months. We never have issues with him getting out at bedtime so far at least. But we shut the door at night so if he gets up we will here him banging on the door. He doesn’t know how to open it yet. We put him to bed sleepy but not asleep and that has worked well for us.

My son slept In his crib until 9/10 months  then in bed with us around 11 months we started putting him in the toddler bed but he’s bed is touching ours since he ALWAYS ends up in bed with us he will be 2 next month

My little one has been sleeping in a big girl bed since about 1 year 5months because she outgrew her camping cot.. she is now almost 2 and sometimes it's a tiny bit of a struggle especially when she is sick.. luckily she mostly sleeps through..
I give her a bowl of cereal like weetabix or something similar at about 8 or 8.30pm and by 9pm she is asleep I found that filled her up.
I'd suggest just explain to him that he is a big boy now and he gets a big boy bed for that reason.. maybe try the cereal thing or even if he drinks tea or water or warm milk before bed.. even 30min or so.. just like we ge thirsty so do our littles..
Maybe a reward chart.? 
I have no advice for if he is in his own room.. we share a room with our daughter but she sleeps in her own bed.. we allow her to fall asleep by us and then put her in her bed..
