How to pick a pediatrician?

FTM here! So since the appointment doesn’t get scheduled until after the baby is born, how do I pick a pediatrician? Like do I just tell them I want this pediatrician and then they put me on the list? 
The one I’m looking at is taking new clients right now, so I guess what I’m asking is how do I reserve my spot to make sure I still get him when baby is born? Or do they even do that? Lol sorry, super naïve￼!

I searched around and the ones o considered gave me a tour and talked to me about their policies and I picked my favorite (same-day appt, separate waiting room for sick children, spacious and clean, friendly staff).

With my daughter I had a recommendation and called they set up an interview sort of appt. I went in and met her and asked her some questions. Then I just had to tell the hospital who the pediatrician is when she was born, or when I registered at the hospital.

Good question I wondered this too with my first. Do your research and know who you want because at the hospital they will ask you who the pediatrician is and you tell them who you want. I suggest calling the pediatricians office though to make sure they are accepting new patients. Also double check with your insurance that the one you choose is covered.

You can call them and ask, most don’t require an initial meet and greet, but offer it if you’d like to discuss specific questions. They can also pre-check your insurance over the phone and you can find out if they do rotations at the hospital you’ll deliver at. It’s not a big deal if they don’t, they will just meet the baby at their first appointment and you’ll have the hospital’s ped do their first check up there instead.
